EastBridge Insight Week #07

The weekly summary for September 14–20 was prepared by Oliwier Gorgoń.

Monday, September 14

Yemen: government forces regain ground in Taiz as Houthis strike deep inside Saudi Arabia. Forces loyal to the UN-recognised government, backed by air strikes, repel a Houthi offensive and advance in the western part of Taiz province. The Houthis, meanwhile, say they have attacked King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones, describing the operation as retaliation for more than 300 Saudi air strikes over five days. The group has also deployed fighters to the Greater and Lesser Hanish islands, located around 160 km north of Bab al-Mandab. According to the International Organization for Migration, fighting in recent weeks has displaced nearly 86,000 people, while more than 2,000 have sought refuge in Djibouti. According to estimates by regional officials at the time, repairs to the East-West Pipeline, damaged in the 11 September attack, are expected to take three to five weeks. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei denies Tehran’s involvement, describing the Houthis as an independent actor pursuing its own interests.

Syria: second day of fuel protests. Demonstrators block the highway linking Damascus and Aleppo for several hours, while protests are reported in Aleppo, Idlib, Hasakah, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor. The authorities attribute the price increases to higher fuel procurement costs resulting from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as more expensive transport and insurance. Syria produces around 102,000 barrels of oil per day against demand of approximately 325,000 barrels, leaving it dependent on imports.

United States and Iran: Trump signals willingness to hold talks. President Trump says he is open to negotiations, claiming that Iran wants an agreement quickly and at any cost, and that he will personally decide whether Washington will enter into talks.

Tuesday, September 15

Saudi Arabia: Riyadh vows a firm response and seeks external support. Riyadh pledges a strong response to the Houthi attacks. Israeli news outlet Walla! reports that Saudi Arabia has sought Israeli intelligence assistance in talks conducted through CENTCOM, while the Israeli military recommends that the government refrain from carrying out strikes against the Houthis.

Iran: Tehran rejects talks unless its conditions are met. Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei accuses Trump of sending contradictory signals and says there will be no negotiations until Iran’s conditions are met. Tehran demands that Washington fulfil the provisions of an agreement signed in June.

Wednesday, September 16

Iran and China: Araghchi in Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi calls on Iran and the United States to exercise restraint, return to negotiations, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible. He adds that Beijing does not want tensions to spread further to Yemen and the Red Sea. The visit takes place ahead of Xi Jinping’s announced trip to the United States on 24 September.

United States: Trump suggests the war may be nearing its end. Trump says that Iran has contacted Washington directly and is seeking an agreement, although he provides no details; the Iranian side does not confirm that such contact has taken place. During a rally in Gastonia, he suggests that the conflict could enter a different phase after the November midterm elections.

Saudi Arabia: drone intercepted south of Mecca. Coalition spokesman Gen. Turki al-Maliki says a drone has been shot down south of Mecca; the Houthis deny that the holy city has been the target. The group instead announces that it has shot down a Saudi F-15 with a domestically produced missile, while footage it releases purportedly shows the tail section of an F-15SR in Marib province.

Central Asia: first summit between the Republic of Korea and the countries of the region. Seoul hosts the first summit of the leaders of South Korea and the five Central Asian republics, which concludes with the adoption of a 30-year framework for cooperation covering critical minerals, energy, supply chains, and emerging technologies. The declaration provides for summits every two years and establishes a new mechanism for meetings of industry ministers. President Tokayev notes that Kazakhstan possesses all ten minerals designated as strategic by Seoul; Mirziyoyev proposes a regional investment alliance for critical minerals and a target of $20 billion in trade by 2030; and Japarov proposes a joint investment fund.

Georgia: Georgian Dream seeks to ban the entire parliamentary opposition. The ruling party expands its application to the Constitutional Court to include former prime minister Giorgi Gakharia’s For Georgia party, effectively bringing within its scope all parties that crossed the electoral threshold in the disputed 2024 election. The application had previously targeted the United National Movement, Lelo, the Coalition for Change, and the Federalists. Cases seeking to ban political parties must be considered within nine months.

Libya: UNSMIL calls for a halt to executions in the east of the country. The UN mission expresses deep concern over the execution of more than 30 people in eastern Libya in recent weeks and calls for an immediate halt to further executions, noting that they mark the end of an informal moratorium that has been in place for approximately 15 years. According to Amnesty International, the executions carried out by the Libyan National Army since 23 August were preceded by closed trials before military courts, while at least another 50 people sentenced to death remain at risk.

Sudan: deadly gold mine collapse in West Kordofan. The Sudan Doctors Network reports at least 67 deaths in the collapse of the Al-Zaraa mine, while an anonymous RSF source tells AFP that at least 82 people have been killed.

Thursday, September 17

Saudi Arabia: first confirmed civilian fatality during the current wave of Houthi attacks. A Yemeni national living in Taif is killed in a drone attack — the first confirmed civilian death in Saudi Arabia during the current wave of attacks. Also, a Saudi woman and a Pakistani national are injured. Government forces, together with tribal units, announce that they have recaptured the Kahbub mountain range.

Syria: government partially rolls back price increases. Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir announces supplies of cheaper diesel for heating, agricultural and industrial purposes, amounting to a partial concession following the largest protests since the fall of Assad. The subsidised price is set at $0.94 per litre, with the decision taken after a meeting between President Ahmed al-Sharaa and representatives of the Energy Ministry.

Lebanon: Paris talks on the deployment of the Lebanese army. France seeks clarification of the operational context, parameters, and rules governing the deployment of Lebanese forces as a condition for broad international support. The disarmament of Hezbollah remains a condition for Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, while President Aoun says he wants the process to take place without confrontation.

Friday, September 18

Lebanon: Israeli and Lebanese forces face off near Deir Mimas. Two Israeli tanks approach Deir Mimas in the Marjayoun district and stop in front of an earthen barrier, behind which Lebanese army vehicles are positioned. After the Lebanese reinforce the post, the Israeli forces withdraw. Israeli artillery also shells Wadi Nahla near Shaqra.

Saudi Arabia: Italian Eurofighter damaged as allies announce new commitments. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto says an Italian Eurofighter Typhoon has been damaged during a Houthi attack on an air base in Taif. Rome announces that it will deploy naval vessels to protect shipping in the Bab al-Mandab area, while Pakistan declares its full commitment to the defence of Saudi Arabia.

Saturday, September 19

Saudi Arabia: fire reported near Riyadh airport. Following an air-raid alert in the capital, fire and smoke are reported in the vicinity of King Khalid International Airport. The Houthis claim responsibility for the attack as well as for strikes on Aramco facilities in Yanbu. Initial reports, however, contain no Saudi confirmation that the fire near the airport has been caused by the Houthi attack.

Yemen: heavy losses on both sides of the front. According to a Yemeni government official, Houthi general Firaq Muhsin al-Asar is killed in the Kahbub mountains along with six members of his staff. The government says it has repelled attacks near Taiz and killed 30 fighters, while acknowledging that 13 of its soldiers have been killed over two days in Taiz and Lahij provinces.

Iraq: no fixed deadline for militia disarmament. Prime Minister’s security adviser Qasim al-Araji denies that the committee responsible for bringing weapons under state control has been given a fixed deadline, disputing the 30 September date that has been linked to the completion of the coalition forces’ withdrawal. A source close to the prime minister acknowledges that the militias have shown no willingness to surrender their weapons.

Sunday, September 20

Iran: conditions for ending the war and warning of renewed strikes. Mohsen Rezaei says Iran has conveyed to Washington, through Qatari intermediaries, a list of conditions for opening negotiations, including an end to hostilities on all fronts, the release of frozen funds, and the lifting of the naval blockade. Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters says it has information that the United States has decided to resume strikes with the approval of some regional states, and threatens attacks against all U.S. bases and any countries providing assistance. Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf says the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Washington fulfills its commitments. In an interview with Fox News, Trump says he is considering three options: destroying the country, leaving its economy to its fate, or reaching an agreement, while leaving open the possibility of meeting Pezeshkian during the UN General Assembly.
