Patryk Radke's Analysis: Saudi Military Modernisation: The Limits of Strategic Autonomy

Our Junior Analyst and Secretary, Patryk Radke, has published an analysis on Defence24 entitled “Saudi Military Modernisation: The Limits of Strategic Autonomy.”

The author examines the modernisation of Saudi Arabia’s armed forces from the perspective of the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance its strategic autonomy. Particular attention is given to the ability to maintain military equipment, replenish ammunition stocks, and ensure continuity of supplies and technical support during a prolonged crisis.

The article discusses, among other topics, the potential acquisition of F-35 fighter aircraft, the role of the Patriot and THAAD systems, cooperation with the United States and the United Kingdom, and the development of Saudi Arabia’s domestic defence industrial capabilities. The analysis demonstrates that acquiring advanced military equipment does not, in itself, guarantee greater freedom of action. The resilience of supply chains, maintenance capabilities, and continued access to support from international partners remain crucial factors.

We encourage you to read the full analysis on Defence24.
